We recently ran a survey of 3,000 travellers to uncover where in the USA they encountered the most warm-hearted and welcoming locals. The top places are listed below.

Key Findings

Warmth Beyond Expectations

It’s clear that kindness is a cornerstone of the smaller towns and cities across America, and this survey showcases how many travelers experienced unexpected acts of warmth.

Cities like Savannah, Jackson, and Murfreesboro earned top spots because travelers not only received assistance or guidance, but were also embraced by the local culture.

For instance, 42% of respondents shared that a local offering directions or personal assistance was the most memorable part of their trip, highlighting the power of small gestures.

Inviting Hospitality

One of the standout findings from the survey is that 17% of travelers were invited to local events or gatherings.

This kind of invitation allows visitors to experience the heart of a community. In places like Charleston, South Carolina, and Richmond, Virginia, where Southern hospitality is ingrained, spontaneous invitations and friendly encounters are not uncommon.

These cities ranked highly for their ability to make tourists feel like honored guests, turning simple visits into enriching cultural exchanges.

Assistance in Times of Need

For 25% of respondents, a local’s help during an emergency or unexpected situation became the defining moment of their trip.

Whether it's the calm and collective nature of Madison, Wisconsin, or the down-to-earth friendliness in Port St. Lucie, Florida, locals in these communities have gone beyond typical hospitality.

Travelers returning from these cities often share stories of how the kindness of strangers became a pivotal part of their travel memories.

Returning to Kindness

The impact of local hospitality runs deep, as shown by the fact that 85% of travelers have returned to a destination specifically due to the kindness they experienced.

This statistic speaks to the power of genuine human connection in creating lasting bonds between travelers and the places they visit.

Communities like Scottsdale, Arizona, and Norfolk, Virginia, stand out because their warmth is not just memorable but also a reason for repeat visits, proving that kindness goes beyond just a fleeting encounter.

Friendships Forged on the Road

The survey results also highlight how friendships can be formed during travel.

These places offer the kind of human connection that transcends typical travel experiences, leaving an imprint that travelers cherish long after their journey ends.

These "friendship towns" represent the kind of community spirit that travelers are actively seeking.

Choosing Kindness Over Destinations

With over 50% of respondents stating that local hospitality is a major factor in choosing a travel destination, cities that embrace friendliness stand to benefit from the loyalty of repeat visitors.

The importance of welcoming travelers with open arms, whether in small towns like Burlington, Vermont, or larger ones like Toledo, Ohio, is critical to fostering tourism.

The warmth of a community can often weigh heavier in a travelers’ decision-making process than famous landmarks or attractions.

Acts of Kindness That Linger

In cities like Annapolis, Maryland, and Waco, Texas, acts of kindness have lingered in the minds of travelers.

Simple gestures, like offering a ride or guiding a visitor to their destination, as experienced by 16% of survey participants, reinforce the idea that genuine care and hospitality are crucial elements in shaping positive travel experiences.
